The Hollywood sign was originally intended to serve as a giant billboard for a new neighbourhood called Hollywoodland. Developers hoped that the sign, which was raised in 1923, would draw new home buyers to the area. It was only in 1949 that the sign was changed from Hollywoodland to Hollywood!
