Prior to the release of the first Sonic game, Sega was desperately searching for a mascot that could rival the appeal of Nintendo’s jumping plumber. Plenty of ideas were presented to Sega’s top dogs, one of them being a very early (and very different) version of Sonic. This proposed mascot was actually a rabbit that could grasp at things with his paws and fight using his own ears! How cute.

Diana Nyad became the first person to swim from Cuba to Florida. She accomplished this feat, without a shark cage or fins, on September 2, 2013. She had attempted the 103-mile journey four times before. It took her 52 hours, 54 minutes, and 18.6 seconds.
