The original word for bear has been lost. In the medieval period, people believed that simply uttering the animal’s name would summon it, so they used a euphemism that meant “the brown one” and the original word, which had never been recorded, soon disappeared.

Hundreds of years ago, Robert Hooke published a book called Micrographia that included hand-drawn images of samples observed under a microscope! Hooke, who we mentioned in a previous fact, is often credited as the discoverer of cells, after studying cork under the microscope.
