‘The Life of Pi’, a novel written by Canadian author Yann Martel, was rejected by more than five publication houses before it was finally accepted. In 2001, it was finally published and won the Man Booker Prize for Fiction. It also won the Asian/Pacific American Award for Literature in Best Adult Fiction. Over ten million copies of the novel have been sold worldwide.

Believe or not, the first McDonald’s was a BBQ shack in San Bernardino, California. Brothers Richard and Maurice McDonald opened the first restaurant in 1940. Eight years after it opened, McDonald’s switched its focus to hamburgers, shakes, and pies. Ray Kroc purchased franchise rights from the brothers and the golden arches appeared across the country, and around the world!

July 7th is ‘Chocolate Day’ so make sure you eat plenty of it this year! Chocolate was first officially brought to Europe on July 7th, 1550. However, some sources suggest it hit the continent’s shores as far back as 1504 thanks to a certain sweet-tooth by the name of Christopher Columbus.
