There’s a persistent belief that the works of Shakespeare were actually written by someone else – the Earl of Oxford, Francis Bacon and Christopher Marlowe being the top candidates. This questioning of authorship is mostly due to the bias of 19th century scholars who couldn’t accept that such brilliant literature was written by a mere commoner.
