Interesting Fact
Gargoyles were not added to churches just for decoration or to ward off evil spirits. They had a very functional purpose. Rain water would pour out their mouths and away from the building, preventing damage to masonry walls. The longer and more grotesque the gargoyle was, the further water was propelled from the wall.
Interesting Fact
Columbus didn’t actually discover America. Viking explorer, Leif Eriksson, arrived there 500 years earlier. In addition, it’s a misconception that Columbus ever set foot on what today is the United States. He only visited – and raided – the Bahamas, the Antilles and Honduras. Never did he realise that he had reached a new continent.
