Hundreds of years ago, Robert Hooke published a book called Micrographia that included hand-drawn images of samples observed under a microscope! Hooke, who we mentioned in a previous fact, is often credited as the discoverer of cells, after studying cork under the microscope.

The Rolling Bridge was a Victorian-era British invention intended to be an alternative to traditional bridges. Users would board the bridge, more like a platform, and would then be carried across the water on a rolling platform attached to rails on the riverbed.

As some of you may know, Sonic can’t swim, and the reason why is rather peculiar. Yuji Naka – one of the game’s original programmers – simply assumed that hedgehogs couldn’t swim, so he wasn’t about to let Sonic do it either. Essentially they were cool with him running at the speed of light but swimming was out of the question. Rather embarrassingly, it turns out that hedgehogs are rather excellent swimmers. Woops.
