Animal Eyes

Ottawa is home to the largest ice skating rink in the world. When the Rideau Canal freezes over, visitors can skate across a huge strip of ice. Check with official sources whether it is safe however, because this will depend on the weather.

The pupil is a hole in the middle of the eye that only appears black because light is absorbed, diffused and/or reflected by inner tissues. Its job is to allow light to make it to the retina. Humans have a circular pupil, but animals can have vertical, horizontal, or annular pupils.

There are at least one million trillion insects on the planet, and a mere one percent of this amount is ants! Imagine taking all these ants (around ten thousand trillion) and piling them up onto a giant scale. Entomologists believe that about 2,000 years ago, the total weight of ants on Earth might have equalled the total weight of people!
