Alfred Mosher Butts, a New York architect, invented the popular board game Scrabble in 1931. He wanted to create a game which involved some luck and a lot of skill (and a large vocabulary)! Butts decided on the point-values of the letters by studying the front page of the New York Times.

Whilst it might be alright to slurp, there’s a whole list of things which are a definite no-go in Japan – passing food between chopsticks being top of the list. Along with leaving the chopsticks stuck upright in a bowl of rice, these practices have connotations associated with funeral rites in Japan, which naturally diners don’t wish to be reminded of. They are considered very impolite.
