The earliest microscopes were called flea glasses because they were predominantly used to observe small insects such as fleas! These microscopes were simple in construction, using different shapes and sizes of glass with low power (6x to 10x). They were invented by the Romans.

Hundreds of years ago, Robert Hooke published a book called Micrographia that included hand-drawn images of samples observed under a microscope! Hooke, who we mentioned in a previous fact, is often credited as the discoverer of cells, after studying cork under the microscope.
