Since the seasons in the Southern Hemisphere are opposite to the ones in its northern counterpart, many countries have adopted the tradition of Christmas in July. This way, even Australians can enjoy a white Christmas in addition to a sunny one.

The word “pizza” dates back over a thousand years—it was first mentioned in a Latin text written in southern Italy in 997 CE. But during the first few decades of the 20th century, pizza was predominantly eaten and sold by working class Italian immigrants.

It’s fascinating that the largest animal ever to have lived on earth, the blue whale, feeds on nothing but krill, shrimp-like creatures that are among the smallest sea-dwellers. But it takes 36 metric tons of krill a day to allay an adult blue whale’s hunger. That’s the weight of 25 cars!
