During World War II, the British government used an interesting method to recruit code breakers to help with the deciphering of the German Enigma machine: they published a particularly difficult crossword puzzle in the Telegraph. Those who could solve it were traced down and, after a thorough background check, invited to join the team.

Ketchup didn’t originally contain tomatoes but was rather a concoction made of fish or mushrooms. Once tomato ketchup was invented, a physician named John Cooke Bennet had the brilliant idea to press the sauce into pills and sell them as a cure for diarrhea, indigestion and rheumatism. The ketchup medicine craze didn’t last long.
