The belief comes from the lack of blue eyes people born in the Middle East and Mediterranean, leading to the superstition that those with light or blue eyes could curse someone just by looking at them.

Gargoyles were not added to churches just for decoration or to ward off evil spirits. They had a very functional purpose. Rain water would pour out their mouths and away from the building, preventing damage to masonry walls. The longer and more grotesque the gargoyle was, the further water was propelled from the wall.
