The earliest microscopes were called flea glasses because they were predominantly used to observe small insects such as fleas! These microscopes were simple in construction, using different shapes and sizes of glass with low power (6x to 10x). They were invented by the Romans.

The name ‘shag’ is linked to Old English ‘sceacga’, which in turn relates to Old Norse ‘skegg’ which means beard! So when you step on a shag carpet, you’re essentially stepping on an old man’s beard.

It’s fascinating that the largest animal ever to have lived on earth, the blue whale, feeds on nothing but krill, shrimp-like creatures that are among the smallest sea-dwellers. But it takes 36 metric tons of krill a day to allay an adult blue whale’s hunger. That’s the weight of 25 cars!
