Ever wondered why the turkey is called a turkey? When the American bird was shipped to Europe, it reminded Europeans of the guinea fowl that Turkish traders had been importing to them for some time. Europeans started calling the bird from the United States turkeys and the name stuck.

He was fond of the turkey, and yes, he did say that he thought the turkey 'a much more respectable Bird’ than the eagle, but he also thought the eagle was an appropriate symbol for our fledgling nation.
