The word ‘hologram’ comes from two Greek words. ‘Holo’ which means whole and ‘gamma’ which means message. Hungarian engineer and physicist, Dennis Gabor, came up with the idea of holograms in 1947 and was later awarded the Nobel Prize in 1971 for the invention.

Mount Rushmore went through several changes. In one version of the monument, words were to be etched into the rock face, words that would briefly describe the history of the United States, highlighting nine important events between 1776 and 1906. But due to funding, and issues over wording, this plan was ultimately scrapped!

The word ‘bankrupt’ comes the Italian ‘banca rotta’, which literally means ‘broken bench’. This refers to the early days of banking in Italy, where the public marketplace would take place literally at the bench. If the banker ran out of money or behaved badly, his bench would be smashed to smithereens.
