Women’s suffrage was one of the major feminist issues of the 20th century. In many countries, suffragettes campaigned for equal voting rights, often being attacked or even imprisoned. In 1909, Elspeth McClelland and Daisy Solomon came up with quite an original idea: to get an audience with the British Prime Minister HH Asquith, they had themselves mailed as human letters to 10 Downing Street. The mail was not accepted.

Ketchup didn’t originally contain tomatoes but was rather a concoction made of fish or mushrooms. Once tomato ketchup was invented, a physician named John Cooke Bennet had the brilliant idea to press the sauce into pills and sell them as a cure for diarrhea, indigestion and rheumatism. The ketchup medicine craze didn’t last long.
