The pupil is a hole in the middle of the eye that only appears black because light is absorbed, diffused and/or reflected by inner tissues. Its job is to allow light to make it to the retina. Humans have a circular pupil, but animals can have vertical, horizontal, or annular pupils.

Alaska didn’t officially become a state until 1959, almost 200 years after the country’s founding. Before gaining statehood, Alaska belonged to Russia before becoming a U.S. territory in the late 1800’s. When it officially became a state, it also overtook Texas as the largest state by area in the U.S.!

There are approximately 6,900 distinct languages in existence today, though there may be languages spoken in remote areas that we have yet to discover. No matter how many new languages we find, though, this number will be much lower in 100 years.
