The attempted Gunpowder Plot of 1605 was a failed assassination attempt on the king’s life in which the assailants attempted to blow up the British Houses of Parliament. The attack was foiled and Guy Fawkes, the ringleader, was arrested and hanged. To this day in Britain the foiled attack is celebrated every year on the 5th of November. Called ‘Bonfire Night’ there are fireworks and bonfires – often with a Guy Fawkes effigy on top!
