In 2020, NASA announced its attempt to grow human tissue – the beginnings of new organs – aboard the International Space Station. According to Cara Thiel, one of the researchers involved from the University of Zurich, the astronauts will use “weightlessness as a tool”, as the lack of gravity encourages stem cells to grow into tissue. If successful, it is hoped the discoveries can be used to grow organs for transplants.
