Do you know why spelling bees are so popular in the English language? It because the spelling of words in English is much more irregular than in other languages. English contains Latin, Greek and Germanic roots which means it’s difficult to known how a word is spelled just from listening to the sound. A spelling bee in a language like Spanish would make it much harder to challenge the youngsters.

The title “Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone” was changed to “Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone” for the American version of the book. J.K. Rowling was not happy about this change, but ultimately had to give in to her publisher’s wishes as they felt their new title was more exciting.
