Saturn's tremendous rings aren't the only outstanding feature of the gas giant: it's north polar vortex is surrounded by a uniquely hexagonal wave pattern. It's not yet understood how the strange structure came to be, but it is gigantic: Each side of the hexagon is longer than the diameter of the Earth! Plus, it changes colour – the images below were taken four years apart. Maybe it's just a giant screw nut that holds the upper and lower hemispheres together?
