A common sight at a British Christmas dinner is a table full of people wearing paper crowns. These come in an explosive tube called a “Christmas cracker”, which is pulled by two people before dinner. Everyone is then obliged to wear the paper hat and tell the terrible joke inside the cracker.

The word “geek” is another slang phrase that’s changed a great deal. In Britain, it first referred to fools, and when it arrived in the US it was used by circus folk to refer to a performer who would eat live animals. Eww. Then, in the 80s, the word evolved to refer to those who were savvy with technology and computers.
